Shepherd Food Ministries (Lincolnshire Vs Hunger)

For this project I was contacted by my cousins. They had asked me to create a new logo for their Shepherd Food Ministries (SFM) charity that was originally set up in 2007 and to create a poster for the arts & craft competition they were hosting later this year. Shepherd Food Ministries operate in Nigeria developing farm land with a relief of food poverty, that is, extreme hunger, a relief of sickness, most particularly a reduction of preventable diseases and the advancement of know-how in the agriculture. SFM help people through various charity projects and their subsidiary brand is Lincolnshire Vs Hunger (LvH).

The theme for the poster and this years arts & cratfs competition was based on "a world without hunger" with submissions being allowed in any format.

To start of this project I decided to take a different approach from my normal method. I recently read 'Logo Design Love' by David Airey. There is a section in the book where he speaks about mind mapping words before you even begin to start sketching ideas for a design project. I decided to try this approach and I'll admit it was very useful because I was able to just focus on coming up with words that related to the topic no matter how silly or absurd rather than jumping straight to design concepts. Doing this made me realize there was a back bone to the process, it allowed structured flexibility if that makes any sense?

Again doing this was able to make me focus on producing more words related to the arts & crafts theme and not just necessarily how it is to look as an idea. After I had reached a point I was happy with I then circled words which I felt would give me a starting point for the ideas stage; words like shape, gluing, cutting, folding, sticking, sparkly, shiny and many others began to stand out to me and form the basis of my initial sketches, again this was a useful technique for me because each sketch was derived from the original words directly related to the theme.

Below you can see the sketches of ideas:

Once I had my sketches I started to select ideas I would then develop and implement to a further stage to then feed back my client with, (even though they were my cousins they are still). At this point I had chosen 3 designs which I felt suited the theme strongly, to implement into software application and send it through. I also annotated each design idea to let them know my thought process behind the ideas.

From this point they had picked their favourite design/s that they wanted me to work on and in this instance it was the first idea I had presented, they also liked the third idea. So with that I began to develop the design further, by adding colour and making a few additional touches to the overall design. Below are the variations of their house colours (green + blue) being used on the design and experimentation with my own selected colours for the design.

The combination of their house colours in this gradient format were not liked on the design so I opted for my own choices of colour for them to choose from.

From these ranges of colours I chose, no.2 and no.5 were preferred over the others. What they wanted next was a different tone from the selected blue and purple.

After the slight colour adaptations and adjustments to the design, they were able to select a colour. Below was the final look for the logo they had decided on. Once completed I decided to create a mock up of their design which can be seen below.

Shepherd Food Ministries (Lincolnshire Vs Hunger) Poster

After the logo had been made I started creating the poster for the arts & crafts competition that is to be held later on in the year. The theme for this years poster is "A world without hunger" so SFM would ideally want people to imagine a world without hunger and what they think such a world could look like. They will be a looking to start a hashtag trend on Twitter with #WorldWithoutHunger #WWH or something along those lines. The competition is for all ages but they will be focusing on targeting young school children, however adults are also welcome. People taking part will be allowed to submit whatever they want along the lines of the theme, it is predicted that they will receive poems, pictures, paintings (either done online or by hand), but there are no restrictions. The project is being run with the support of Lincoln Food Bank.

In a similar way to the logo I started jotting down words and started sketching whatever Ideas came to my head regarding the theme, to be honest there was a lot of ideas that came to my head for the idea for a poster but I was able to channel it down to something I felt fitted the brief and was more in tune with the theme. I felt my strongest idea came from having the food groups (in some form) being included on the poster however I did try others.

So the basis of my idea came from the seven nutrient food groups; carbohydrates, fats, protein, fibre, fruit & veg, minerals, vitamins and water. I wanted to somehow include an item from each category into my poster. Once I had the ideas of what food items to pick I started creating the poster. But before I had this idea though I was working on having basic art & crafts materials in the poster an example can be seen below:

As it was an arts and crafts competition I did want to include this somewhere on the poster without actually having to solely rely on words however the feedback I got from the client they didn't want the arts & crafts materials and suggested food, (as the poster was trying to tackle hunger) with this it's where I came up with the idea to include the food groups. Below shows what it looked like with food instead of arts & crafts equipment:

So with food in mind I went through and selected what I wanted to illustrate on the poster carbohydrates - bread, fats - cheese, protein - meat, fibre - fruit, minerals - beans. Once the client had received this version they had said they were happy with it but wanted a few more changes to be made.

They had suggested having the arts & crafts materials turning into food via a plate or another means but I didn't feel that suited the transition from art equipment into food so I decided to use a food colander. At this stage the client was happy with the poster however I made one minor adjustment to the poster in order to complete the poster. Below is how the final poster looked:

Interview - Marketing & Design Junior

Okay we are in the new year now and I thought it would be positive to start off with a positive which leads me to this post. So I have a friend (who I've known since secondary school) who informed me of a marketing & junior designer vacancy at his place a rule I tend to hear so often is 'it's now what you know but who you know' which I felt was directly applicable to this situation.

So with that information I decided to apply for the position, lo and behold I had an interview with Aegis Vision Limited (the company) it was literally all thanks to my friends referral and making me aware of the position in the first place! I didn't feel this interview was as tough as some of the other interviews I had towards the end of 2015, but that could have been me getting use to the idea of being interviewed a bit more frequently or being well prepared for what I know is to come or perhaps a combination of both. The interview went well I believe the company liked my work and they felt I was ambitious if I was successful in the interview they would set me a brief to do by a deadline and if they liked it then I would go through to seeing the CEO. I did the brief and sent it to them before the deadline (exactly to a minute). They didn't actually specify if they received the files but I can only assume they did as I wasn't successful this time round. They didn't give me any feedback this time so it has left me with a state of constantly questioning myself with things like what if I had done this or had done that etc. But in the end I had to just let it go, there will be plenty of times where companies don't give any sort of feedback that is something I've learned to just accept.

Below is some of the pieces of work I had produced for the company:

Take several of our existing products from the website to from a promotional campaign  (www.uunique.uk.com)
  • Find a connection and create a tagline – explain briefly your target audience and why you choose the tagline & campaign.

Alongside the campaign was the brief explanation: My target audience for this campaign isn't restricted by age because I felt everyone is unique or special in their own way so limiting the target audience for this campaign might not be the best idea for what I wish to achieve. However the main audience are people who like to be considered quirky, unique, uncommon, unusual which can be anyone. They specifically go out of their way to stand out from the crowd which is where the idea for the strap-line 'SEPARATE YOUR STYLE' came into play I felt it added unison so the overall campaign and the products itself . Whether it be shoelaces, hair colour, piercings, wrist bands, friendship bracelets, or other types of fashion accessories that represents an individuals identity. Phone cases, wallets and weave straps can now be added to that persona.

  •  Create a graphic to be used on a PPC website to encourage click to buy.

  • With the same theme/campaign create a product promotional e-newsletter /mailshot to be sent to our web subscribers.

These were just some of the tasks they had asked me to do and the final pieces I had produced for them. As previously mentioned I didn't actually receive any feedback on both the interview and the work I had produced for them I have tried to ask a few times for feedback but it has been to no avail. Personally speaking I felt the role wasn't actually suited to the all skills I posses and from the interview itself I felt it was more focused on the marketing and social media aspect of the role as opposed to the design. I know I have little experience in marketing so I can only assume that would be along the lines of the feedback I would've got but I will never know it would seem.

Even though I didn't get this position I felt I have started the year off on a positive, to be able to get an interview in January has kind of set the tone for the year for me and I really hope there is more where this came from.

Interviews + Feedback

So this is the first post of the year I have been really bad at blogging recently in the sense that I haven't really been posting all the things that I said I would and I can only blame myself for that. However now we are in a new year and I feel this could be a time to start up again and no, I'm not jumping on the 'new year, new me' bandwagon or what have you, I just felt and feel it was a good time to start posting again.

Where to start of okay so towards the end of last year after holidays in August and September, I decided to try and start applying again for designer jobs again however, the time off gave me a fresh approach of applying for jobs which I am grateful for as it landed me three interviews. Later on in September I had an interview with a company called Fluid Structures they are an engineering company that have a close relationship with architects and designers, I was interviewed here for a Junior Graphic Designer & Marketing role. I was successful in the first stage and was called back for a second interview where had to take an Indesign test and had I passed the test to a good standard I would then move on to the next stage. But I was unable to get through to the last round though I had done well on the Indesign test I was informed others had performed better on the test and they got through it was cut from eight to four to then two.

The second interview was for London School of Business and Finance (LSBF) I was interviewed for a Junior Graphic Designer position. This for me was actually quite a tough interview in the sense that some of the questions that were asked I hadn't even thought of in my prep for the interview so they did catch me a bit of guard however I answered EVERY question to best of my ability and of what I knew. But again I wasn't successful this time round due to a limited experience and lack of digital experience they were looking for which I can't argue with. However besides the failure of not landing this job the feedback I received was positive, helpful and reassuring it definitely gave me belief and a platform to push on to try and secure more interviews which will eventually lead to me landing a permanent role.

The third interview was for Ennovators a global eCommerce company who provide beautiful, stylish furniture and furnishings. The interview went well they liked my work and believed I had a good presence during the interview we actually went off topic and started discussing about other things, then we got it back to the position that was probably one of the first times that has happened during an interview. The role was actually a Graphic/Web designer internship to start off with and if successful would lead to a full time role. Again I wasn't successful in this instance they appreciated my work but the designer they hired in the end, had more experience in UX and eCommerce which again I can't argue with as I have little experience in those fields.

All these interviews in the end has made me think perhaps I need to seek more experience in different fields, as I seem to be fixated on branding and print and not so much on digital however it's just that those are the things I enjoy doing and that I'm good at. Whatever the outcome of the interviews I am and was very grateful these interviews happened in the first place the companies and teams I saw have no idea how much being interviewed meant to me I did say a big thank you to everyone for seeing me and taking the time out to consider me for the roles, it does give you a lot more confidence and it certainly helps me believe that I am on the right track, I couldn't be more grateful.
