Spider-man: Far From Home

As a BIG marvel fan I've been highly anticipating the release of the new Spider-man: Far From Home film which I believe comes out here in the UK on the 2nd of July, the film follows on from The Avengers End Game (which I'm sure you have watched by now) so you'd be aware of who has passed in the upcoming Spider-man film.

I came across the official Spider-Man poster for the IMAX release and I have to admit I was severely underwhelmed by the poster. Naturally people on Twitter took the time to deliberately mock the official poster and come up with their own versions and I must say the versions I saw were amusing.
But, on a larger note something that disappoints me about this new Spider-Man, (the remakes that feature Tom Holland) is if you cast your mind back to 2017 when the first Spider-man: Homecoming was released. Great film and great trailer but at the time I thought that, that poster used for the film was also very dull and uninspiring and they seem to just be getting worse, I have no doubt that Far From Home will indeed be a good film, but if there happens to be another Spider-man film after Far From Home I honestly dread to think what that poster would look like.

Anyway here are the posters for the Spider-man films the first being the upcoming release
Spider-man: Far From Home and the second (although released first) Spider-man: Homecoming.

Epilepsy Rebrand

As a subscriber to design week I get a lot of weekly emails regarding jobs, reviews, talks, exhibitions, hot topics and other similar aspects of design. With this weeks email I came across a rebrand for a charity called Epilepsy Research UK. They are dedicated to the research of causes, treatments and diagnosis for the disease epilepsy (though I'm sure you already got that). The rebrand which was done by Helen Holden Design gives it a fresh new look that focuses on the charities scientific status.

Founded in 2007 the charity is a merged combination of two previous existing organisations, the Fund for Epilepsy and the Epilepsy Research Foundation. The work here focuses on supporting clinicians and scientists investigating epilepsy, especially it's causes, what happens (to the brain) during a seizure, how treatments such as drugs and surgery can be improved for the disease.
Epilepsy is a condition that affects the brain, which can cause different types of seizures.

What I like most about the redesign is the scientific and yet corporate merge kind of look to it, you get the sense that this charity is authoritative, trusted and strong about the psychological effects of epilepsy which can be demonstrated by their scientific research and their breakthroughs regarding epilepsy. The "E" symbol separated by what I read are neurones (cells that carry messages to and from the brain) and the logotype which sits to the right, form a strong bond and a clever visual representation of the Charity's work towards helping epilepsy patients.

The rebrand can also been seen on all touchpoints, such as the website, social media, print marketing materials (reports and pamphlets), and merchandise such as stationery, please take a look below at the redesign:

The Bezier Game

Earlier this week I was randomly browsing some online tutorials (I always try to find time in a week to brush up on my technical skills) and I came across a tutorial regarding the pen tool in Adobe Photoshop. I am already quite familiar with the pen tool, but I guess I was interested to see if there was anything new I could learn. Even though I didn't necessarily learn anything new, I did receive some tips on how to increase my speed when dealing with anchor points. The person in the video mentioned a game used to help you master using the pen tool, it was called The Bezier Game (if you have some time try it out).

You're given different objects and shapes and are tasked with trying to trace the object/shape following the short tutorial they give you beforehand, in as least nodes as possible (nodes being the anchor points). I'm not sure how many levels exist but here are a few I had done:

Norwich FC home kit

Another team whose home kit I've also taken a strong liking to is Norwich FC (congratulations on your promotion to the premier league, Canaries). Occasionally I tend to check other football leagues (just out of my pure addiction to football) and I stumbled across Norwich's home kit for the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship season I'm not sure who they were playing but they were at home and that's when I noticed the design of their kit.

A bright yellow shirt with a geometric sort patten (just enough to cover their shoulders) using their house colours (green, white and yellow), green shorts with a yellow rim and of course green and yellow socks. To be honest the only part of the kit that drew my attention was their shirt's design. The design pays homage to one of the clubs most famous shirts in its history from the 1993-94 season but, with a modern twist, in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the their UEFA cup run. Take a look below at each of their shirts:

Napoli Home Kit

As an avid Arsenal fan I always tune into the games online or at a bar when they're playing (If I can't get tickets to a match) but where they are playing I'm most likely following that's what you do when you support a club. Anyway this post isn't actually about Arsenal but their Europa League Italian opponents  Napoli. On Thursday (18th April 2019) we had the second leg of our quarter-final Europa League tie at their home ground the 'Stadio San Paolo' and one thing I noticed when the teams came out was instantly Napoli's home kit. The bright blue, geometric patterned shirt with fluorescent yellow marks, white shorts, with their crest on the blue socks and (the same) yellow strap.

Personally I liked the kit very much, we don't see designs like this in the premier league so it was refreshing to see something so different being allowed in a European competition (sometimes there are design restrictions) but it received a lot of backlash from their own fans and let's just say their fans remained split over the design. Something about the kit (which is where it won me) that I didn't notice until I saw it up close was, amongst the geometric blue patterns, if you look closely you can see a panther in the design which I thought was quite clever, the idea behind the inclusion of the panther I read, was that their club owner wanted to see 11 beasts fighting on the pitch this season, pretty cool stuff.

Take a look at the design below:

Bauhaus Logo Makeover

Upon my weekly dose of inspiration I came across an article on the 'It's nice that' website where Bauhaus were celebrating it's 100 year anniversary of the art school by having a group of international designers redesign famous logos BUT in the style of Bauhaus, Netflix, BBC, Google and Starbucks to name just a few. 99designs created the competition with the online community being briefed on incorporating Bauhaus design principles when redesigning the logos, here are the designs having been given the Bauhaus treatment:

Inspiration

I'm currently in the process of redoing my portfolio (what designer isn't?) and I will admit some days I do find it a bit daunting and lose motivation and other days I don't. The reason why I lose motivation from time to time is because, in 2017 just after finishing my MA I had major health troubles which are still effecting me now sadly. However I try my best to push through it because it doesn't immobilise my ability as a graphic designer.

I wanted to speak about being and staying inspired (originally why I brought up losing motivation), my MA lecturer always use to say to our class 'in order to output, you must input' (que thoughts of a dojo teacher dressed in a kimono) and it always seems true, as I currently search for ways to redo my paper portfolio I stumbled across this Creative Bloq article https://www.creativebloq.com/portfolios/paper-portfolios-5132559 and I'm completely amazed by what I see and it immediately gets the ball rolling for me.

Here are just a few examples of the portfolios + links to their pages

Lisa Dino

ALU

Dyla Rosli

Charlotte Allen

These were just some of the projects that I really liked and the ones that stood out to me, so if they did to me imagine how it will for an employer. Anyway with all this in mind I started generating ideas for my own paper portfolio, as I already have an online portfolio I like the idea of potential employers having something tactile in their hands as they observe the work, and if successfully executed they carry long lasting impressions, which might put you ahead of the competition.

London City Airport rebrand

As an avid reader/follower of design week, I recently landed on an article regarding a London City Airport rebrand. The rebrand has been done in order to reflect the increase of leisure flights from the airport, as opposed to it just being for business travellers. For those that are not familiar London City Airport, is London's central Airport that have flights across Europe and to certain parts of the United States. Typically, London City airport cater towards business travellers but between June and September last year (2018) their statistics revealed that the demographic flying from the airport had changed ever so slightly.

For the first time ever, the percentage of those purely travelling for Leisure eclipsed those of business travellers at a ratio of 52% to 48% and as a result, a new visual identity had been created (to reflect this) and to appeal to a wider range of passengers whilst empahsizing it's standing as an airport in the centre of London.

Old logo:
ข้อมูลสนามบิน : สนามบินลอนดอน (LON) (อังกฤษ / สหราชอาณาจักร)
New logo:

Bits: more on BA’s new CW and F seats, £400 back on £500 ...
Immediately, what you can notice with the new logo is the green and blue colour palette supported by the heart in the middle, representing and referencing the airports location of being at the centre of London. Clever.

Overall I believe the new logo works in reaching a wider and perhaps younger audience simply by, the use of colours and new type it gives the design a fresh and clean look, not to say that the previous logo was bad or the opposite, but you can tell it was for a more mature audience hence why it was typically aimed at business travellers. But with the addition of leisure travellers came the new look.

New Year Update

As it is the new year, I have said I will try my best to keep on top of my blogging, it isn't as easy as it once was because, previously I had the time available to me now I have to find the time which is where the difference lies. But as previously stated I will use 2019 to keep my blog up to date and post anything I feel like discussing or has caught my attention (be it good or bad).

Towards the end of 2018 I was able to get a role as a Graphic/Digital Designer at Small Steps Project. They are a charity that support children and families that work on rubbish dumps, by delivering shoes, emergency aid and hygiene kits protecting children in that kind of environment.

Annually they hold a celebrity shoe auction, where (you guessed it) A-list celebrities donate their shoes to be sold off in an auction, all the money raised is used to continue the support of emergency aid and helping children take small steps out of poverty with the aim of living a more dignified life.
